NEW DELHI: A bill that seeks to make it easier to register ships, protect the interests of Indian sailors on foreign ships, and create a body to monitor and regulate the security of both ships and ports was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, amid protests from the opposition that said the Centre did not have the legislative competence to bring about the law.
The Merchant Shipping Bill, which also seeks to expand eligibility for merchant vessel ownership and address marine casualties, was presented by Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
