The objective of the bill which amends 183 provisions in 42 acts is to reduce the compliance burden and promote ease of living and doing business in the country. The bill was passed through a voice vote amid protests and sloganeering by the Opposition over its demand for a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the House, followed by a detailed discussion on the Manipur violence.
Moving the bill for passage, Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said around 40,000 provisions and procedures that had the possibility of creating hurdles for people were either simplified or removed by the Narendra Modi government over the last nine years.
