"just as it sought votes in the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who banned BJP's ideological fount, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, by constructing his statue in Gujarat".

The former chief minister's comments came days before the state votes for crucial assembly elections on November 20, and on a day that leaders across party lines paid homage to the Sena founder on his death anniversary. Balasaheb Thackeray died at his residence, Matoshree, on November 17, 2012.

Thackeray, who was addressing a rally at the BKC ground a day before campaigning for the elections ends on Monday, said: "If Modi has to ask for votes in the name of Shiv Sena chief, it is a revenge of destiny. This is where you lost the election!"

He further alleged that the NITI Aayog's blueprint to develop the metropolitan region was a ploy to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra by undermining the BMC's importance.
