The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought data from the Union government on Bangladeshi immigrants who availed citizenship of India under Section 6A of the Constitution Act in Assam, saying there was no material before it to indicate the number between January 1966 and March 1971 was so great that it impacted the demographic and cultural identity of the northeastern state.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud on Tuesday started hearing a clutch of petitions challenging the validity of Section 6A, which was inserted into the Citizenship Act of 1955 in 1985 as a special provision to deal with the citizenship of people covered under Assam Accord a tripartite agreement that All Assam Students' Union (AASU) signed with the Assam government and Rajiv Gandhi-led Union government, to preserve and protect the cultural, linguistic and social identity of Assam.
