IF THERE’S one city that knows how to party, it’s Manchester.
All around the city yesterday people lined the streets, soaking up the sunshine and fully embracing the Manchester Day celebrations for a very special summer edition.
Themed as Manchester Day – On Holiday, the family-friendly event may have scrapped its popular parade but it more than made up for it by transforming the city into a seaside destination.
As the clock struck 12, Deansgate welcomed visitors eager to try out the massive helter skelter, an attraction that punters queued all day round to enjoy. Taking over the section of the road from Peter Street straight down to the Cathedral, it was a pleasant surprise to see a car-free
Deansgate transformed into a holiday destination complete with a Venetian Gondola, sand sculptures and even passport control.
Making the most of the celebrations, Coun Pat Karney, chair of the event, said: “Today’s event has been one of the most spectacular shows Manchester has ever seen. Amazing activities and stunning shows have thrilled Mancunians. It’s been wall-to-wall people throughout the city centre. The smiles and joy on children’s faces, many of whom cannot afford to go on holiday, makes all the work worthwhile.”
