FOOD giant Kraft Heinz wants to build a £40m green-powered hydrogen plant at its baked bean factory that could generate more than half of the gas it uses.
The Kitt Green plant in Wigan employs 850 people and makes Heinz beanz, soups and spaghetti hoops.
Now Kraft Heinz has signed an agreement with energy firm Carlton Power to plan the creation of a hydrogen plant there.
It would produce hydrogen using energy from renewable sources, mostly wind and solar power.
That would meet more than half of the site's annual natural gas needs and reduce its carbon emissions by 16,000 tonnes a year.
It's a massive boost for the Wigan plant, which in early 2022 missed out on a potential £140m investment.
