Create a plot to delight all ages

A garden's not just about plants it's also a space for making memories

HOW do you make a garden for all members of the family? Can one plot really work for everyone - kids, teenagers, adults and pets? With careful planning and a dollop of imagination, you can plan a plot which will delight all ages.

And here's what you should consider before you start creating. First, who will be the users? You might need a kickabout lawn for youngsters to play on and perhaps some practical hard space to put a table and chairs for some outdoor dining and relaxation for the grown-ups.

With so many of us now working from home, is there a requirement and the space for a garden office? One which may double up as a teenager's den at the weekend? Start your planning process by making a list of your users and their requirements.

Remember to include features needed such as washing lines and garden storage. Think about what we accumulate - bicycles, wheelbarrow, and especially the bins.

Involve whoever will be using the space early on - and make sure you find out what's important to them.
