A DRIVER hit a schoolboy after running a red light before 'disgracefully' fleeing from the scene.

The 11-year-old boy suffered a serious brain injury, a broken thigh and a collapsed lung after being hit by Raja Khan in Gorton.

The boy spent five months in hospital and underwent numerous operations. He has suffered from cognitive issues and is expected to be permanently affected. Khan, 35, has now been jailed for three years and four months.

After hitting the boy he drove off 'at speed, eventually handing himself in to police the following day.

Manchester Crown Court heard members of the public had tried to detain Khan at the scene, but he fled through an area which was cordoned off for roadworks.

"Mr Khan, you in my judgement quite disgracefully decided to flee," Judge John Potter told him.
