In a must-win game, United look humdrum and get what they deserve

UNITED players emerged to a chorus of 'You're s--t and you know you are' from the Bayern Munich supporters. Their supporters did not take exception.

Out of the Champions League and not even in the Europa League. Of all United's group stage eliminations, this was strangely humdrum.

This was the most undramatic night in a drama-laden group when it had to be dramatic. In a must-win game, United did not approach it with the desire or desperation that was required. Rather than go out all guns blazing, United did not even pull the trigger.

"It's coming home," sang the Germans. There are no home comforts for United. They have walked off the Old Trafford turf beaten on seven occasions already this season.

Some United supporters briefly chanted 'attack, attack, attack' in the 86th minute but were in the minority. The majority were sanguine when an outbreak of outrage would have been justified.

United have finished bottom of Group A with one win, one draw, four defeats and a goal difference of -3. Such a performance warranted a more appalled reaction at the final shrill though the United supporters creditably offered support.

The contingent stood next to the Bavarian brigade sang relentlessly, bringing an away-day atmosphere to the usually mild-mannered Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. They were the only United representatives who maintained a modicum of intensity.

The occasion descended into a borderline exhibition match as United ended the evening with Sofyan Amrabat and Jonny Evans at centre-half while rookies were introduced for experience.

Andre Onana elicited a cheer for deceiving Harry Kane as if it was Soccer Aid.
