THE multi-million pound project to create a new home for Oldham's Tommyfield Market is nearing completion.
The M.E.N. received a sneak preview as the new venue off Yorkshire Street enters its final phase of construction.
The building site next to Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre, which was purchased by the council in 2020 for £9.5m, will become the new home to 70 traders from the borough's historic market by spring next year.
But across the venue's 450,000 square metres, visitors will also find a banquet hall and performance space, three bars and a publicly accessible local history archive.
The project will replace the current Tommyfield Market site on Albion Street, which is due to be turned into housing, a park and the new Eton Star Academy school, and the Queen Elizabeth Hall event space, which will be demolished as part of plans to create 2,000 new homes in Oldham.
