UN like 'old company, not entirely keeping up with the market, says EAM S Jaishankar

DISCUSSES GLOBAL SHIFTS AND INDIA'S ROLE AMID GEOPOLITICAL CHALLENGES

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday expressed a critical view of the United Nations, likening it to an "old company" that has not fully kept pace with changing global dynamics, despite continuing to occupy a central position in world affairs. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave in New Delhi, Jaishankar highlighted the United Nations' limited role in addressing contemporary global crises, while also pointing out the emergence of alternative multilateral mechanisms.

In a wide-ranging discussion focused on India's role and challenges in the evolving international order, Jaishankar addressed pressing global concerns, including ongoing conflicts, India's engagement with its neighbours, and the future of the United States' geopolitical outlook.

Jaishankar did not mince words in his critique of the UN's current state. Referring to it as a "bystander" in relation to two major global conflicts, he questioned the UN's relevance in resolving pressing issues. "Where is the UN on these conflicts? Essentially, it is a bystander," he said, without directly naming the conflicts.
