Only a few people were seen seeking to deposit or exchange their high-denomination notes at bank branches. Branches at Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, a hub of jewellery trade, witnessed some crowd from nearby workers.
However, most banks, including State Bank of India, insisted customers furnish identification documents when exchanging notes despite the Reserve Bank of India’s clarification that know-your-customer (KYC) verification is not required as the notes remain legal tender. Furthermore, discrepancies were observed among various banks in the forms provided to customers for this purpose. A Bank of India branch in Mumbai even refused to exchange notes from non-customers. Special counters were also absent since there was no rush.
