The royal runner could not catch the Irish winner Continuous, ridden by jockey Ryan Moore, in the finishing straight at Doncaster.
The King, 74, and Queen, 76 - who paired two different hats with an eggshell blue dress - were joined at the event by their racing manager John Warren.
The couple had travelled down from the Balmoral estate in Scotland, where they had privately marked the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
