If you like clean, sanitised humour and polite word play, comedian Jim Jefferies isn't your guy. The Australian funny man has become known for his no-holds barred, blunt approach. He has won over audiences globally with his mix of social commentary, self-deprecation, and what he calls "dirty jokes". His Netflix specials have made him a global superstar.
After years away, Jefferies is returning to South Africa this week, to an audience he calls one of his earliest and most enthusiastic. "South Africa took me on board about 12 years ago," he said. "I'm very happy, very honoured to be coming back."
Jefferies said that he'd like to have Oscar Pistorius at this performance. The somewhat recently paroled athlete has been the butt of many of Jefferies' jokes over the years.
"Oscar's out," he said, "and there's a good chance he's seen my routine. At the end of my shows, I do let disabled people come backstage, so he's welcome."
Jefferies also does a South African accent particularly well, especially in his Pistorius skit.
Growing up in Sydney, he was surrounded by South African neighbours and has been imitating the accent since he was a child.
"I feel a lot more connected with South Africans than I do when I'm playing a gig in, for example, Belgium," he said. "There's also some commonality with people who play the same sports," he added. That would be cricket and rugby.
