The protest followed the death of separatist and leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was gunned down in a mob-style shooting in Canada. Sikh separatists alleged the killing had Indian links. The poster doing rounds on social media read: "Khalistani leaders wanted dead or alive" and depicted five Khalistan movement leaders, four of whom have died.
