Bandhni promises luxury khadi tradition

National Institute Fashion of has Technology (NIFT) Daman brought together renowned artisans from the Khatri cluster in Kutchh district, Bhuj, Gujarat, showcasing their exquisite craftsmanship on Khadi materials as part of Khadi Mahotsav.

The workshop, attended by Textile Design and Fashion Management students, focused on the ancient art of Bandhni, a traditional craft that harmoniously complements Khadi fabrics. Ammar Khatri, a 24-year-old skilled artisan, who holds a Diploma in Fashion Design, provided hands-on demonstrations, sharing the intricacies of this delicate craft.

"This craft is our livelihood," said Ammar, whose family of 12-13 members has been practicing Bandhni for generations.

"We have enough work, and dropouts are minimal due to reasonable returns." The Khatri " community, comprising Brahmin, Muslim,and Punjabi, has been instrumental in preserving this traditional craft. Approximately 5,000 Families, with 4-5 members each, are involved in this artisanal endeavour.
