Several Opposition MPs who are part of the Joint Parliamentary Committee that is reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday and submitted a letter to protest against alleged unilateral decisions being taken by the panel chairperson and senior BJP MP Jagdambika Pal in a bid to "force through" the proceedings.
The 31-member Committee was formed after the Bill, that seeks to amend key provisions concerning Waqf institutions in India, was introduced on August 8 and is expected soon so that the Parliament may proceed with the Bill further. The panel was constituted after several opposition parties criticized the bill for undermining federalism and constitutional principles.
