The Congress took this as a sign of disrespect, accusing the government of not finding a site for a memorial for the former prime minister a man who not only served the country but also held an unparalleled record in global diplomacy and economic reform. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh voiced the party's outrage, tweeting that the people of India were left unable to fathom why the government could not allocate a location "befitting of his global stature." He described this lack of a memorial as "nothing but a deliberate insult."
