Rajyamata Gomata status for desi cows

The Maharashtra Government on Monday declared indigenous cows as 'Rajyamata-Gomata', citing the importance of cows in Indian culture, agriculture and healthcare.

The decision has been taken in the cabinet meeting held on Monday. A statement from the Dairy Development and Animal Husbandry department says, "Considering the revered position of the indigenous cow in Indian culture since the Vedic era, the significance of native cow's milk in human nutrition and the vital role of cow dung and urine in Ayurvedic medicine, Panchgavya therapy and organic farming, the government has decided to officially recognise indigenous cows as 'Rajyamata Gomata' moving forward."
