Syria's interim Prime Minister, Mohammed al-Bashir, has vowed to usher in a period of stability and progress following the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad. Tasked with leading a transitional government until March 2025, al-Bashir emphasized rebuilding Syria, resettling refugees, and restoring basic services despite severe financial constraints.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, al-Bashir, formerly head of the rebel administration in the northwest, acknowledged the challenges ahead. "It is time for people to enjoy stability and calm," he said. "However, the road will be tough as we are facing a significant cash crunch. The coffers hold only Syrian pounds, which are worth little. One US dollar now exchanges for 35,000 pounds," he added, highlighting the dire state of the economy.
During an interview with Corriere della Sera, al-Bashir revealed that Syria currently has no foreign reserves. "Loans and bonds are still under review, but the financial situation is dire," he admitted.
