Shah remarks spark nationwide protests

The Congress on Monday organised press conferences across the nation to demand the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar during the Constitution debate in Rajya Sabha on December 17.

The party leaders and workers also came out on the streets in some states and held protests. In Raipur, the police used water-canons when the protesters broke through the barricades and tried to march to the CM's residence.

The Congress has been protesting Shah's statement - "It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had taken God's name so many time, they would have got heaven for seven births." He had added that "take his name a hundred times more but I want to say what are your real feelings about him."

Shah had said Ambedkar had to resign from the first Cabinet over his disagreement with the then Congress-led government's policies, including on Article 370, and asked, "How appropriate is it for you to use the name of a person for vote bank politics whom you used to oppose?"
