Washington Sundar wrote the finest script of his short Test career with a 7/59 to help India bowl out New Zealand in the first innings for just 259 on day one of the second Test at the MCA Stadium, here on Thursday.
After electing to bat on a pitch that was expected to play low and slow and offer turn, New Zealand prepared for Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja but Sundar was the surprise after India gave him the nod ahead of Kuldeep Yadav.
And the Tamil Nadu man did not disappoint to give the team impetus in a crucial Test match which they must win to be on track for the World Test Championship final of 2025.
The visitors were all out for 259 in 79.1 overs. In response, India began cautiously but skipper Rohit Sharma was bowled by Tim Southee without opening his account off nine balls as the home side reached 16/1 in 11 overs at stumps with Shubman Gill (10) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (6) holding fort.
