Back in Vogue: 33 years on, recreating the image that defined the supermodel era

It was the image that ushered in the age of the supermodel: Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz and Linda Evangelista photographed together by Peter Lindberg, gracing the cover of the January 1990 edition of Vogue.

Now, 33 years later, the image has been recreated for September's issue of the magazine, and a version of the cover will appear across the UK and US editions of Vogue, with the line: "The greatest of all time." It is only missing Patitz, who died this year.

Now in their 50s, the four women are re-evaluating the late 80s and early 90s, when they first began modelling, thanks to a much-anticipated upcoming documentary, The Super Models, available on Apple TV from September.

A feature in the magazine gives an idea of what this era was like for the women, when the frenzy of fame put them in the spotlight, especially after the video for George Michael's Freedom! '90. His video featured all five of the Vogue cover models, apparently after Michael saw the January edition of the magazine.

"It was insane. We are not the Beatles," says Evangelista of the public reaction to the video, and the subsequent Versace show finale, which saw them lip-sync to the George Michael song as they linked arms on the runway.
