Trump made the comments in his first sit-down press interview since the verdict was returned on Friday, finding him guilty of falsifying business records linked to an illicit affair with adult actor Stormy Daniels.
The former US president appeared yesterday in a taped interview on Fox & Friends, a friendly forum on the right-wing channel in which a trio of hosts served him softball questions.
Throughout the interview, Trump derided the conviction, characterising it as "weaponisation" of the US justice system, while thanking the Republican party for their support.
"People get it. It's a scam," he said, speaking of the trial. "And the Republican party... they've stuck together in this. They see it's a weaponisation of the justice department of the FBI and that's all coming out of Washington."

Poppunk is very much a thing again, and no artist can claim to have made punk more pop than Lavigne did in the early 2000s, refashioning its sound as bratty but harmless tweenage entertainment.
Music review Thigh-slapping country glamour still impresses
