In a verdict delivered yesterday, a panel of judges found 14 people who took part in unofficial election primaries in 2020 had conspired "to subvert state power" under the national security law imposed by Beijing. Those convicted included one organiser and 13 candidates. Among them were the politician Helena Wong, the veteran campaigner Leung "Long Hair" Kwok-hung, the journalist Gwyneth Ho, and a dual Hong Kong-Australian national, Gordon Ng.
The 10-month trial, part of the prosecution of the "Hong Kong 47", finished in December, more than 1,000 days after the first arrests.
A former district councillor, Laurence Lau Wai-chung, and Lee Yue-shun, a former social worker, were acquitted, in the first acquittals granted after a prosecution under the 2020 national security law (NSL).
However, the justice secretary's legal team said he would appeal against the acquittals. The judges, handpicked by the Hong Kong's government, agreed to extend most of the pair's stringent bail conditions in the meantime.
