Italy's foreign ministry has summoned the Iranian ambassador and called for the immediate release of an Italian journalist being held in solitary confinement in Tehran.

The move came after Cecilia Sala, 29, a freelance journalist for Il Foglio newspaper, reportedly spoke of the harsh conditions she is experiencing in the notorious Evin prison, including having to sleep on a bare cell floor. Sala, who was in Iran on a media visa, was arrested on 19 December on charges of breaching Islamic law.
