Organisers said they had started to let traffic flow out of the main road from about 2pm on Monday - even as they asked revellers to delay their exit to yesterday to ease traffic. As of Monday afternoon, they said, about 64,000 people remained at the site. Organisers also asked them not to walk out of the desert, as some had done over the weekend.
The festival had been closed to vehicles after more than 1.3cm of rain fell on Friday, causing flooding and foot-deep mud.
