We had to fight hard to be heard, Spain players say after boycott

Speaking on the eve of a Nations League match in Sweden, the Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas told reporters: "We had to fight very hard to be heard. For decades, we had detected systemic discrimination against women's football."

Her remarks came a month after Spain's World Cup win was overshadowed by an unsolicited kiss on Jenni Hermoso by the country's former football chief Luis Rubiales.

"What our colleague Jenni went through cannot be tolerated," Putellas said. "Football is a reflection of our society and we didn't want to set a precedent by brushing aside a situation like this."
