WORK is underway to secure funding for the £51m redevelopment of Plymouth’s towering Civic Centre – with the council agreeing to underwrite the cost of the huge project. A report will go to Plymouth City Council’s cabinet this autumn, setting out the budget and programme for the ambitious scheme to turn the derelict skyscraper into luxury flats above a college campus.
David Draffan, the council’s service director for economic development, said the authority would underwrite the risk of the project in order to prevent it being stalled “indefinitely”. Writing in a newly published Plymouth economic development blog, Mr Draffan described the project as “challenging” but stressed it would “kick start city centre regeneration”.
