PLYMOUTH’S Victorian crematoria at Efford and Weston Mill could close after the opening of the city’s new £29 million The Park – but the cemeteries at the two sites would still be maintained.
Plymouth City Council has said no funerals were being requested at the old sites, following the creation of the new facility in Plympton.
A report prepared for councillors at a scrutiny committee meeting said it was “not cost-effective to keep the buildings maintained, heated, and with sufficient staffing to be able to open them up”.
The council has told The Herald that the Efford and Weston Mill facilities could close – at least for funerals, but it stressed the cemeteries would still be looked after, even if there were no funerals there.
