THE Care Quality Commission staged an unplanned visit to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital, as the hospital brought to a close its fourth 'critical' incident of 2024.
Hospital chiefs said inspectors from the health watchdog visited the emergency department this week, on the fourth day of the latest critical incident. Inspectors were finalising their visit yesterday.
Derriford Hospital declared a critical incident on Sunday as its Accident and Emergency department struggled to cope the fourth time already this year, said to be due to high occupancy within the hospital.
The critical incident was official ended yesterday, meaning it had lasted for five days in total.
An email sent by University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) on Wednesday morning said: "Our unannounced CQC inspection continues and, following their visit yesterday to urgent emergency care areas yesterday, the CQC inspectors will return this afternoon from noon.
