Explosion in city would have been disastrous

THE Keyham bomb could have caused a huge explosion, destroying houses, underground services and leaving a 10 metre-wide crater.

Explosion in city would have been disastrous

An explosives expert said that, if the World War Two device had been detonated in the city, it could have brought widespread destruction to the area but he reassured other householders they are highly unlikely to encounter anything as dangerous.

Army bomb disposal experts were, thankfully, able to remove the Keyham device on Friday and blow it up at sea. If they had been unable to do this and were forced to explode the bomb where it was, there was a danger of huge damage being caused, but the experts were able to make the bomb safe enough to move by truck and dispose of at sea, with the help of the Royal Navy. Their work saved homes and vital utilities.
