Kane and Bellingham fire England to quarter-finals

Gareth Southgate’s men looked to be heading out of the tournament after a miserable display against opponents ranked 45th in the world.

However, having barely threatened the Slovakian goal all match, Jude Bellingham came to England’s rescue in the fifth minute of stoppage-time with a superb overhead kick from 10 yards out.

Then, just a minute into the additional 30 minutes of extra-time, skipper Harry Kane headed England in front after a good header across goal from substitute Ivan Toney.

England held on to their advantage with not too many alarms and will be mightily relieved to have snatched victory after another below-par display at these championships in Germany.

Southgate handed 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo his full competitive England debut for the last-16 clash with Slovakia.

Having trialled Trent AlexanderArnold and Conor Gallagher as midfield partners to Declan Rice, Mainoo was given the nod to start after impressing off the bench in the goalless draw with Slovenia last time out.
