THE National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded £246,000 to commemorate the founding of Devonport 200 years ago.
Real Ideas, the organisation behind Plymouth's Illuminate Festival, has announced the grant, which will be used to curate a new programme of activities to commemorate the bicentenary.
Over the course of the next five months, Real Ideas will be working with local community groups and leaders, historians, church and faith groups, volunteers, local schools and partner organisations, including Plymouth's The Box and the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, to run a range of events and projects to provide new insights and experiences that engage people with the history of Devonport over the past 200 years, and what the next 200 years may hold.
In early March 2025, this work will culminate with a spectacular light event beaming specially commissioned images related to Devonport on to iconic buildings in the area.
