HUNDREDS of sailors and Royal Marines will march through Plymouth on Wednesday, September 20, at 10am, to celebrate the close relationship between the city and the Royal Navy and mark the 60th anniversary of a prestigious event.
The Freedom of the City was granted to the Royal Navy’s Plymouth Command in 1963, and sailors marched up to the Hoe for the civic event.
The Freedom of the City is the greatest ceremonial honour a local authority can bestow, and gives military organisations the privilege of marching into the city.
Over the past ten years, HM Naval Base Devonport has gone through several transformations, but continues to support Royal Navy operations in the west of the UK and across the globe.
During the day, there will be a parade to mark the special event, with members from across the city attending to celebrate, including the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor will deliver a special speech, to acknowledge the honour and thank the Royal Navy for their work and dedication. The Royal Marines Band will also be present at the ceremony. The band will form outside the Theatre Royal, and will proceed to cross Royal Parade to Armada Way.
