PLYMOUTH Tory councillors have begun a probe into the Armageddon clause which closed the city's airport. Members of the Conservative Group are going through the lease agreement to see if the procedure which led to the airstrip being shut in 2011 was followed to the letter.
The Tories have said they are "clear and unambiguous" on the benefits of retaining the airport for aviation. They are looking into the lease agreement now, as the five-year-long protection for aviation operations expires in March 2024.
Opposition leader Andy Lugger, who is also a lawyer by profession, is closely examining the lease which handed the 113-acre site to Plymouth City Airport Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sutton Harbour Group Plc (SHG), in 2004. He is particularly interested in the so-called Armageddon clause which enabled the company to stop flights if the airport was deemed uneconomic.
