Your street could be a power station

THERE are not many people who would willingly call for their street to be turned into a power station. But that was exactly what one London couple called for - and achieved - last year.

In fact, they were joined by dozens of their neighbours in the otherwise nondescript Lynmouth Street, in Walthamstow each displaying an A4 poster in their windows bearing the words 'Power Station.

Hilary Powell and Daniel Edelstyn, who started the campaign, were not envisaging giant smoke stacks, or towering pylons.

Instead, their vision was for each home to be fitted with solar panels and for their campaign to spark a national change in the way we power our homes.

The couple camped on the roof of their home, moving their bed to a spot between chimney pots and wrapping a foam mattress in plastic so it would be protected against the elements.

Having set up a scaffold in order to reach the roof, they vowed to sleep there until their crowd funder reached sufficient levels to provide solar power for 30 homes - a green power station on their very own street.
