SC bins Punjab's plea on NRI quota extension

THE Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the Punjab government's appeal challenging the High Court's verdict quashing the state government's decision to widen the ambit of 'NRI quota' in undergraduate medical admissions, saying, "This fraud must come to an end now.

" On September 10, the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected the state government's August 20 order extending the ambit of the 15 per cent NRI quota for medical admissions to include distant relatives of NRIs "such as uncles, aunts, grandparents, and cousins."

A division bench of the high court had come out with an elaborate judgment setting aside the state government decision to broaden the ambit of NRI quota for admissions in medical colleges in Punjab.
