THE closure of Murdeshwar beach has diverted tourists to other famous beaches of Uttara Kannada district, including Gokarna. Over the past week, seven people, including two foreign tourists, have been rescued from drowning at Gokarna beach.

As the New Year is approaching, the locals are demanding additional security and rescue measures at Gokarna and other beaches in the district.

Tourists, who come to enjoy themselves in water, have been losing their lives in the sea. Recently, five students from Kolar and Bengaluru drowned at Murudeshwar beach which led to its closure. Tourists are banned from visiting the beach now. However, at Gokarna's Kudle Beach, lifeguards have rescued five domestic and international tourists over the past four days.
