THE outcome of Vaikom Satyagraha, one of the earliest organised and successful non-violent movements in India that effectively ended untouchability, would have been different had a man from Tamil Nadu not arrived to take the mantle.
It is only fitting that the centenary celebrations of Vaikom Satyagraha conclude by remembering 'Vaikom Veeran' E V Ramasamy who revitalised the protest during a time of crisis.
Fondly called Periyar or Thanthai Periyar, Ramasamy's contribution to Vaikom Satyagraha solidifies his place as a blazing beacon in the history of Kerala's renaissance. His dedication and leadership were instrumental in the movement's success, leaving a lasting impact on the fight against untouchability. Known as the father of the Dravidian Movement in TN, Periyar stepped in to lead the satyagraha when it was on the verge of collapse following the arrest of almost all its leaders.
