India cuts malaria burden by 69% in 6 yrs: WHO

INDIA has made "significant progress" in reducing malaria incidence and mortality, according to the latest World Health Organisation's (WHO) World Malaria Report.

The number of estimated malaria cases in India decreased from 6.4 million in 2017 to two million cases in 2023, an estimated 69% dip in 2023. Similarly, the estimated malaria deaths decreased from 11,100 to 3,500 (68%) in the same period.

According to the report, there were an estimated 263 million cases and 5,97,000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2023, representing about 11 million more cases in 2023 compared to 2022, and nearly the same number of deaths.
