DR BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), originally established as Andhra Pradesh Universal University in 1982 by then Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, is facing significant challenges, worsened by the Telangana government's decision to halt admissions in Andhra Pradesh for the 2024-25 academic year.
Renamed in 1991, the university has been a key institution for higher education for marginalized communities but has encountered increasing difficulties since the bifurcation of the state in 2014.
