On the other hand, photojournalists bring stories to life with unfiltered images using their cameras. They do this not just to capture moments but also to uphold journalism's core values and deliver truth through images.
While anyone can take a photo, becoming a photojournalist requires a deeper dedication. Photojournalism is guided by strict ethical principles and a commitment to objective truth, all to inform and educate audiences through powerful imagery.
Last September 28, the Readiscover Program held its third quarterly workshop session, focusing on the essentials of photojournalism—its definition, purpose, roles, and value to the public.
We were privileged to have Miguel "Gudo" De Guzman, one of the The Philippine STAR photographers, as a resource person. He is a veteran with nearly two decades of experience in photojournalism, 10 of which he's spent with The STAR. De Guzman specializes in covering the Central Police District, which covers areas including Quezon City, San Juan City, Pasig City, Mandaluyong City, and the entire CAMANAVA (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela) region, along with the northern provinces.
He shared that The STAR photographers are highly adaptable, covering not just news but also sports, lifestyle, and business events. De Guzman is currently stationed at the Quezon City Police District Press Corps Office.
TALES TOLD THROUGH PICTURES
We began the workshop as soon as De Guzman arrived at the office. The attendees exceeded our expectations, leading us to upgrade to a bigger capacity. The workshop started with a discussion about the definition of photojournalism—the art of news storytelling through unfiltered and raw photographs. It is done visually by capturing real-life events, people, and places to convey their importance and to evoke emotions.
