The 'mislaying' of crop loss data gathered by the ISRO satellites in the last two years has discouraged a large chunk of Bengal farmers from crop insurance, resulting in 41.66 per cent of registration just a week ahead of completion of the scheduled signing up time.
Bengal targeted enrolment for 60 lakh farmers for Bangla Sashya Bima this year by 31 August, which, according to the senior agriculture department officials, has reached 25 lakh on Tuesday.
In East Burdwan, a meagre 1.5 lakh farmers have responded till Monday against targeted 5 lakh farmers, the officials said. For Bankura, the target is 4 lakh farmers.
