Even as the Chenab Bridge has stolen the show, other aspects of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project, including the Reasi railway station, are equal engineering wonders of the Indian Railways.

Partially perched on bridge Reasi station remains a marvel

A part of the Reasi railway station which is all set to embrace operations this month, is partially perched on a bridge making it an engineering feat of the national carrier.

As the Kashmir Valley is all set to have all-season rail link for the first time after independence, Reasi railway station is to play a crucial role in this connectivity.

Of the entire route of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project spanning over a distance of 272 km, the sections up to Sangaldan on Srinagar side and that till Katra on the Udhampur side are operational.

However, a distance of around 63 km, including a 46 km stretch between Sangaldan and Reasi via Chenab Bridge on Srinagar and Baramulla side and a 17 km network between Reasi and Katra via Anji Khad bridge on Udhampur side are yet to be commissioned.

Boon or Bane?

Plato’s epic The Republic’ tells the story of two mythical city-states: one believes in moderation while the other believes in consumerism. Unable to sustain its large population, the second city-state casts avaricious eyes on its neighbouring territories, plunging the country into war. Read US and China for the second city-state, and the analogy is complete. The question Plato raised is the essence of the population debate of today: Is human population the issue, or is it the resources it consumes?
