Perhaps an insight

'My grandmother was dying," said Evelyn.

"Besides my mother, she was the person closest to me. I loved and adored her. Her happiness meant everything to me.

"You must understand: that was the context in which I made the decision I did. It was a little over a year since I had met Dave. We dated regularly. He came over often to my home. My parents and my grandma, in fact, every member of my family, had met him. He was a good-looking man, pleasant and affable, making a decent living as an accountant.

Everybody liked him. I did too.

"When the doctors gave their verdict and we knew that grandma had three to five months to live, we all wanted to do everything for her.

When I asked what I could do for her, in retrospect it seems predictable what she would say. She said, 'I want to see you married before I go.' It was assumed who the groom would be." Evelyn pushed the tray with the decanter closer to me and I poured my drink. We have known each other no more than a couple of months but I feel comfortable with her. She is gracious and I suspect she makes most people feel comfortable.
