Probe into Eden Gardens fire 'likely'

Just a little less than two months before hosting five matches, including a semi final, of the World Cup of 50 - over cricket, Eden Gardens late into last night coped with a fire said to have been purely fortuitously noticed by some renovation workers inches off the visiting side's dressing room on the Dr BC Roy Clubhouse's ground floor behind a false ceiling which the fire brigade put out after a brief effort very early this morning, said sources in the Cricket Association of Bengal.

An alarm had been sounded close to midnight and the blaze was extinguished shortly before 12 - 30 am. Two fire engines had rolled up very soon on being called up, finishing their job promptly and efficiently.A source in the clubhouse spoke of "an investigation in the offing," adding that damage resulting from the fire was mostly limited to players' cricketing equipment strewn about the dressing room floor. Further inspections will follow, it was claimed too.
