Ms Liz Truss became the shortest-serving prime minister in British history on Thursday, resigning after just six weeks in the top job following a series of policy missteps and U-turns that plunged the economy into turmoil and sparked bitter infighting in her Conservative Party.
With her resignation, the Tories will now hold a contest to elect a new leader that will be concluded by Oct 28, according to Mr Graham Brady, the chair of the party's 1922 Committee, which plays a key role in the election process. Ms Truss, 47, will stay on as prime minister until her successor is chosen.
Speaking at a press conference outside her No. 10 Downing Street office, Ms Truss acknowledged that she had lost the support of her party's MPs. "I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party," said Ms Truss.
