The state ranked third on casualties reported on national highways (NHS), after Uttar Pradesh (7,212) and Tamil Nadu (5,360; see box). On Sunday, former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry and his friend, Jehangir Pandole, were killed in a car crash on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway at Palghar.
The number of highway casualties, however, is coming down in the state. Compared to 5,083 deaths on national highways in pre-Covid 2019, Maharashtra saw a 21% drop in casualties in 2021. Mounting speed cameras, stepping up enforcement and fixing road engineering issues has worked wonders on the Mumbai Pune Expressway, bringing down casualties by 52% between 2016 and 2020.
