Grades system to go, 'meta-body’ for accreditation now

The controversial grades awarded by NAAC to universities and colleges will be scrapped and accreditation will become a binary process —institutions will be tagged as either ‘accredited’ or ‘still-to-be accredited’. NAAC, National Institutional Ranking Framework and National Board of Accreditation will also be merged into a “meta-accrediting body”—National Assessment Council.

Mumbai: The controversial grades awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to Indian higher education institutes will be completely scrapped. Instead, the assessment body, in a remedial process, is looking at making accreditation a binary process. This means that universities and colleges will be tagged as either ‘accredited’ or ‘still-to-be accredited’. In a bid to weed out corruption, “unhealthy practices” and the ugly “race” which push institutes to hire consultants, the NAAC has now developed newer structures that will make assessment more robust.
